The cylinder is made of
ivory, dating in Meiji Period(late 19th century).
The vase inlaid in mother-of-pearl, horn and
coral with a scene of aquatic birds amongst lotus and
pairs of cockerels perched in flowering trees with
wood base. Detail in the representation by a skilful artist (Genzan).
Such large Shibayama vases are quite rare. The overall condition is excellent.
The Shibayama technique was named after Shibayama Dosho, who introduced it in Japan in the 18th century. It was used exclusively on items for import to the West. Shibayama pieces are applied with microscopic pieces of inlay, elaborately carved and on a ground of lacquer or other, to stand out in relief. In Shibayama Technique elaborately finished pieces of ivory, mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell, horn and other materials are used.
